Salvaged Sustainable Recycling
of Organic Red Bay Trees for Garden Designs
RATIONALE: Jekyll Island Beetle Infestation is Killing Red Bay Trees by the Thousands
Jekyll Island Authority Landscape Superintendent Cliff Gowron kneels on the stump of a Red Bay tree next to the Horton House ruins on Jekyll Island, Georgia. The tree, once considered to be one of the largest Red Bay Trees in the country, had to be cut down in November, 2009 due to an infestation of beetles that killed the tree.
PURPOSE: To provide a means to:
- Clear away the dead beetle invested Red Bay Trees
- Resolve the fire hazzard of the dead trees on Jekyll Island
- Generate a more visually appealing landscape on Jekyll Island
- Develop a positive outcome for the JIA in this tradgedy
- Include the residents of Jekyll Island into a tangible process for the land and island they live and dwell
- Salvage and Reuse of damaged and dying trees into WeDo Services Limb & Branch Garden Designs
- Educate and Train individuals, groups (intergenerationally) in the creative aspect of Reuse, Recycle and Sustainable uses for damaged natural resources
- Organize a systematic process for the distribution and availability of the Garden Designs for the public, as a historic landmark in their own gardens, homes and landscape
- Generate funds for the continuing Creative Restoration and Preservation of Jekyll Island.
ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
FOCUS Ministries, Inc. will administer over an organized group of concerned and skilled craftsmen and women who will oversee the operation and community service. The Task Force will be made up of Contractors, Project Managers, Craftsmen, Forestry, and Administrators who will serve to educate, enlighten and trained interested citizens in the art of valuing sustainable organic resources.
